Ode (owed) to black women
“Freeing yourself was one thing, claiming ownership of that freed self was another.”
― Toni Morrison, Beloved
America was founded as the land of the free and the home of the brave. However, that freedom has historically been limited to a specific few, subjugating the larger whole to a lesser liberation. Since our arrival in these young colonies, Black women have carried the mantle of bravery while remaining shackled to the stone of injustice – freedom within sight, but out of reach. As America strides ever closer to her stated ideals, Ode (OWED) to BLACK WOMEN seeks to document and celebrate the stories of Black women.
Join Pieces of a Dream, Inc. in a dialogue about Black Women's History. This interactive event will include excerpts from Ode (OWED) to BLACK WOMEN and discussion about our individual responsibilities to our families, our communities, and ourselves. With the research guidance of Dr. Emerald Christopher-Byrd (Women & Gender Studies), this partnership highlights the experience of Black women as related to matriarchy, girlhood, feminism, women's suffrage, Black disenfranchisement, and patriotism.
Collect a group of friends and loved ones and pull up a chair to the table. Please join us as we claim our freedom!
